On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 28, 2025, a shooting occurred outside the Russell Road Apartments in DeKalb, Illinois, leaving one individual with serious injuries. The victim was airlifted to a Rockford hospital and was undergoing surgery as of 6:15 p.m., according to DeKalb Police Chief David Byrd .Shaw Local
The incident prompted a citywide emergency alert at 1:45 p.m., advising residents to avoid the area while authorities responded to the scene . Two suspects were taken into custody shortly after the shooting; however, no criminal charges have been announced at this time.Shaw Local
